It's Been a While - Respiratory Kingdom Lesson

Between remodeling our Southern Utah home, living in a trailer while we moved to a new town/ finding a new home, having another sweet baby and getting settled. We have been CARAZAY busy in the most difficult, wonderful ways.

Today I had a thought to share some of our many lessons. Now that we are established into our 5th year of homeschooling, I don't feel it is as pertinent to share every single lesson. It is simply too much. Please know that we are bent on finding truth, understanding how to seek through truth through the gospel Jesus Christ as well as historical and scientific patterns. We are also understanding the differences between absolutes and theory. Our education method is focused on true principles and seeking on moving forward and improving.

We have grown through trial, error, interests, faith and hard work and sweat. It has been quite the beautiful ride.

Today we began our introduction lesson on the Respiratory System:
This is a wonderful video that focuses on the beautiful creation of the body: I like to share it to keep perspective as to why we are so grateful that God created the body. It serves as a wonderful attention grabber:

I also began with a story by Sheila Kindred called make a Joyful Noise...
About how we use our voices (lungs) to glorify God from a beautiful perspective of a child and his struggle with another child who sings to loud, out of key and the wrong words.

On LDS.org there is an article called Symbolism drawn from the Human Body: https://www.lds.org/ensign/1986/10/understanding-scriptural-symbols?lang=eng

We discussed the principles and overview of how we breath from a baby's first breath outside it's mothers body.

Jesus created the air we breath D&C 88:6-13
We do not find the word "lungs" in the bible but we do find the word "Breath" in many places. Genesis 2:7 and discussed the creation of Adam. 2 Nephi 9:26 and Mosiah 2:21 and how God "lends us breath" from day to day. We will do copy work and Cursive with these verses.
Air passes through the mouth, tongue, teeth larynx, windpipe all making different kind of sounds.

We practiced singing lessons and pretended to be part of a professional singing choir. One of the best way to excursive our physical and spiritual lungs is to sing! We spoke about the diaphragm and how this muscle helps move air in and out of the lungs. We did several scales and voice exercises from Oooh, has and mm's on C and G but also La's and Mary had a little Lamb in a circle making certain every person was on pitch and how to blend our voices by controlling the air that came out of our lungs.

The kids chose the song We'll Bring the World His Truth in pg 173 of the children hymn book.

The Kids were curious about Vocal Cords and wanted to know how they worked while singing.
We watched this video:

We then watched this fabulous music video of four people singing "Hear Us and Have Mercy" and the close up of a vocal cord. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XGds2GAvGQ

One woman named Mandy Harvey lost her hearing. She controlled her tones using her ability to control her vocal cords, breathing and feeling the vibrations in the floor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKSWXzAnVe0

What questions do this bring up? How does she use her lungs?

How do we control pitch with breath?

How do vocal cords work?

We then finished with a wonderful video four on Amazon Prime on the Respiratory and Circulatory system and how they work so wonderfully together. It was perfect considering we have already covered the circulatory system.

Next week we will discover the beauty of smell - being a major way the outside world makes it to our central nervous system. How to use our lungs and put good things into them. Ways we can honor the Sabbath in our homes. What the Israelites did anciently in the tabernacle with smell and how that relates to prayer.

This video will be a wonderful gateway into exploring in more detail the lungs, a science project, how to keep our lungs healthy, the nose and the diseases of the lungs and end with the Vocie of Jesus.

As a guide I am using "My Body is a Temple" by Julianne S Kimber. You can find their curriculum here.
https://textbookpublishers.net/catalog/junior-a/science/junior-science-1-my-body-a-temple-teacher-manual
It also comes with a workbook:

It is my preferred guide for junior physiology. The Senior physiology works right in with the junior lessons, where we can begin with this lesson and then break away for individual study and time. The youth create their own physiology books.
